I'm from London. Suppose that counts as part of the close enough. I've only been to Japan twice, but one of those times was for a few months. I picked up some of the language, but not enough to call myself fluent.

While I'm not officially a teacher, I know a tricks on how to learn it. [ because when you have a grandfather who insists on speaking nothing but that to you, you have to find some way to keep up. ]

There're tricks to learnin' a language?

There is! My favourite trick was trying to integrate French much as possible in my daily life but tried to make the transition easy. At the start, I would write down a list of groceries I needed to buy and, next to the word, write down its equivalent in French. Then as I got better at it, I started translating more complicated things into French like schoolwork or notes I left for my friends.

Reading familiar novels or watching recorded plays that were translated into French was also helpful. I didn't have to struggle to figure out what the context was thanks to my prior understanding of it.

I figure my head'd explode if I tried learning more than one speak at a time, but... this is pretty interesting.

no no don't text. i mean actually hand write stuff out. it apparently helps some part of your brain understand the language better.

I am pretty sure it can actually. I think there's a translator on the device. I used it the other day to read some of the french signs in the hospital.
