Sentience is not bound to being human, if that is what you are asking. And sentience is needed for there to be ethical weight. We don't hold a tiger accountable for eating what it must to survive.

It is futile to hold a beast accountable, just as it is futile to be concerned if you put one down for survival's sake. It is nature. If there is sentience, there is conscious will.
